After building a model rocket, seeing it launch into the air is the next fun part. Launching a rocket is easy to do but it takes some time to prepare the launch area so the rocket is launch successfully while everyone involved in the launch stays safe.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Launch pad
  • Motor
  • Wadding
  • Launch igniter
  1. Step 1

Find a large open area to launch the rocket from. A park or a large open field are good places to perform a launch. Make sure the launch area is clear of any overheard power lines or trees.

  2. Step 2

Set the launch pad in the middle of the launch area. Carefully load the motor onto the rocket. For safety concerns, only use the motor the rocket came with. Using a larger motor can cause serious injury.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the rocket by stuffing it with wadding if you're using a rocket with a parachute recovery system. Then put the igniter in the rocket motor and cover it with the plug provided by the rocket kit. Finally, remove the launch safety cap.

  4. Step 4

Stand back at least 20 to 30 feet from the rocket for a safe launching distance. If there are any bystanders in the launch area, wait until they clear the area or go politely ask them to move for their own safety.

  5. Step 5

Do a countdown from ten to zero and then press the button and watch the rocket blast into the air. The countdown is not only done because it's fun, it's also for safety to keep all spectators informed and alert so they know when the rocket's going to be launched. This also gives you to time to stop the launch if you notice something awry with the rocket.

  6. Step 6

Recover the rocket once the launch has been completed and clean up any pieces from the launch.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the rocket doesn't launch after you press the launch button; wait at least 60 seconds before approaching the rocket. Check all the wires, ignitor and motor to make sure it's been installed correctly and try again. If it still doesn't work, you may need a new motor.
