Installing an aftermarket air intake in your car or truck is not only easy and can be done in an afternoon, but also provides better fuel efficiency and more horsepower. With the right tools and a good set of instructions, you can upgrade your air intake system quickly and easily.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather the specification information for your vehicle. This should include year, make, model and engine type. If you already have aftermarket parts, write those down too. This information will help you find the right aftermarket air intake system for your vehicle. Take the information to an auto parts store or purchase your intake system online.

  2. Step 2

Read the manufacturer's instructions that come with the intake system. This will be the most important set of instructions you will receive as it will be particular to your car and intake system.

  3. Step 3

Allow your engine to cool completely. Starting with the negative terminal, unplug the battery.

  4. Step 4

Remove the stock air intake system according to the instructions in your vehicle's repair manual. This should include the air filter, the air filter casing, the tubing from the air filter box, a variety of hose clamps and a couple of sensors which need to be handled carefully.

  5. Step 5

Set the old intake system aside. Do not discard until you have properly inspected and installed the new intake system. Install the new intake system according to the manufacturer's instructions. Refer to your vehicle's repair manual for additional information. Check the intake for play room. It needs to be tightened in the mounting to not hit other components in the engine bay.

  6. Step 6

Re-install the battery terminals and lower the car off the jack stands or other support device. Start the car and take it for a test drive. Keep the radio off to listen for unfamiliar sounds or other indications of an improper installation.
