How to Change a Sanitary Pad

Getting your period is one of the rites of passage in a woman's life. There are several different type of products available for women to use during their period, including sanitary napkins. Sanitary napkins are rectangular pieces of material worn in the underwear to absorb the menstrual flow. Changing your sanitary napkin regularly will help protect against leaks and odor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a sanitary napkin that is right for you based on your absorbency needs. Your menstrual flow will determine how often you need to change your sanitary napkin.

    • 2

Find a restroom or space where you will have privacy.

    • 3

Lower the bottom portion of your clothing to expose your underwear. Pull down your underwear so you can see the crotch portion.

    • 4

Remove your used sanitary napkin by grabbing one end and pulling it towards you. You can use toilet paper to wrap your used sanitary napkin or unwrap your new sanitary napkin and use the wrapper for your used one.

    • 5

Discard your used sanitary napkin. Many public restrooms have a small bin on the wall of the restroom to dispose of sanitary products. If not, use the trashcan.

    • 6

Peel off the strip on the back of the sanitary napkin that covers the adhesive. If the sanitary napkin has wings, unfold them.

    • 7

Press the sanitary napkin, adhesive side down, firmly in to your underwear. If your sanitary napkin has wings, fold them over the edges of your underwear.

    • 8

Pull up your underwear and clothing.

    • 9

Wash your hands using warm water and soap.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your menstrual flow varies throughout the course of your period. Change pad sizes based on your absorbency needs.

  • Do not flush sanitary napkins down the toilet. They can clog the toilet, causing it to overflow.
