A dry toilet is a useful commodity when there is little or no access to water or water usage is a concern. This is often the case when camping or at other times when access to running water is limited or nonexistent. To survive these instances with a greater level of sanitation, build a dry toilet with few simple materials and these easy steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 identical buckets
  • Cloth or plastic bag
  • Bucket lid
  • Wire
  • 2 pieces of rope
  1. Step 1

Make the bowl from a piece of cloth or plastic shaped into a funnel. If you're using cloth, seam it together at the side and then wax or oil it to create a nonstick surface.

  2. Step 2

Fasten a circular piece of wire to the bottom of the cloth so that it fits down inside of the bottom of the bucket. The wire also helps weigh down the cloth or plastic and keep it in place.

  3. Step 3

Cut off the bottom of the first bucket and drill two holes on opposite sides.

  4. Step 4

Run a rope loop through each of the two holes in the side of the first bucket. When the toilet is completed, you can pull these ropes to create an airtight trap to separate the waste from the bowl and seat.

  5. Step 5

Cut out the middle of the bucket lid's top to create a large ring.

  6. Step 6

Fold the top part of the bowl over the top of the bucket.

  7. Step 7

Fasten the lid on top of the bucket with the assembled bowl placed inside so that the lid holds the cloth or plastic bowl in place.

  8. Step 8

Run the bottom part of the bowl through the snare formed by the two loops of rope. Pull the ropes tight to create an airtight trap. The bowl should now form a sphincter shape.

  9. Step 9

Place the assembled bucket inside of the other bucket. Using two buckets creates a self contained simple dry toilet, with one bucket forming the bowl and the other bucket forming a receptacle for the waste. Simply lift the first bucket, or bowl, out of the bottom bucket and empty it. Or the dry toilet can be placed over a pit dug into the ground if using it outdoors.

Tips & Warnings
  • In order to make the lid or seat more comfortable, wrap with an old towel or piece of foam before fastening to the top of the bucket.
