How to Enable ClearType in Windows XP

ClearType is a font smoothing method. It works very well for any standard definition computer monitor, making the edges of screen type seem much less jagged. On high definition monitors, this isn't always the case; it may make your fonts appear blurry and unfocused. If it works for you, ClearType is a small change that can make a huge impact on your screen's appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the Display Properties menu in Windows by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop.

    • 2

Select the "Appearance" tab along the top of the properties window.

    • 3

Click on the "Effects..." button on the right side.

    • 4

Change the second drop-down menu from "Standard" to "ClearType." Click the "OK" button to close the Effects window. Then click "OK" again to close the Display Properties window.

    • 5

Decide if ClearType works for you and your system. Look at text on high contrast backgrounds, like black text on a white page, and see if it looks clear. You can turn ClearType off by going through the above steps and switching the drop-down menu back to "Standard."
