Portable apps are EXE files that run from a portable device such as a flash drive, CD or DVD. Autorunning portable apps from a CD allows you to run applications on a computer without installing them to a hard drive. Using a CD or other external memory to autorun portable apps is perfect for computers with restrictions, such as school or work computers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • CD-R/-RW or DVD-R/-RW
  • CD or DVD burner
Step1
Find the Setup File or EXE file for the app you want. If you already have the file on a computer, click on "Search" in the "Start Menu" and input the file name for the apps you want. If you do not have the Setup or EXE file, search the Portable Apps website to find the file.
Step2
Install the application if it is not already installed on the computer. Move the app into a folder on the desktop so it is easily accessible.
Step3
Open the folder you saved the file to in Step 2. Locate the EXE file for the program. The EXE file needs to be located there.
Step4
Open Notepad on your computer. The Notepad program is located in the Accessories folder in your program files.
Step5
Type "[autorun]" and hit Enter on the keyboard. Next, type "open= filename.exe." For example, if you wanted to use a file named "ABC," the line needs to read "open= ABC.EXE." Save the Notepad document in the desktop folder with the EXE file and name the document Autorun.
Step6
Copy the Autorun and EXE files. Highlight and right-click the files. Choose "Copy" from the Edit menu.
Step7
Insert the CD-R/-RW or DVD-R/-RW into the burner and open the drives window. Click on Computer or My Computer and select the drive the burnable CD or DVD is in. Paste the copied files into the drive's open window by right-clicking and selecting "Paste."
Step8
Burn the CD. Depending on the operating system your computer uses this process varies. Close the session after the CD is burned. If the session is left open the CD will not work in other computers. Eject the CD and use your portable apps on other computers.
