How to Add Chanserv to an IRC Channel

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is the oldest open form of chat on the Internet. Once a free-for-all, IRC channel ownership on most networks is now managed by a service called ChanServ. IRC users who have a registered nickname can start a new channel.

Instructions

    • 1

Log on to the IRC network and add a channel registration in ChanServ. Register your nickname (handle) with NickServ on that network. Identify yourself to NickServ with the NickServ password.

    • 2

Join the channel you would like to register. Query ChanServ to make sure the channel isn't already owned.

    • 3

Send a registration request message to ChanServ. Go through the IRC server using the standard "/msg" command with the syntax, "/msg ChanServ REGISTER #channel" password description.

    • 4

Replace "#channel" with the name of the channel, "password" with your desired channel access password, and "description" with a short description of the channel's purpose.

    • 5

Declare ownership by registering the channel with ChanServ. Allow or restrict other users from using the chat channel.

    • 6

Grant access to channel operator functions using the ChanServ access features. Use various ChanServ commands to identify the authority structure in your channel, restrict certain users, invite users, change the topic visible to others on the IRC network and more.

    • 7

Visit the channel at least once every 30 days to maintain your channel registration. You must also make sure that your nickname registration remains current by identifying yourself to NickServ at least once every 30 days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Syntax for communicating with ChanServ may vary. The syntax above is for the IRC Services version of ChanServ written primarily by Andrew Church. On most networks, you can send a message to ChanServ with just the word "help" to receive a list of ChanServ commands.
