Instructions

  1. Create the Egg Sculpture

    • 1

Find an egg shaped mold to use for your egg sculpture. You can generally find these in retail or craft stores.

    • 2

Put 3 cups of sugar in a bowl and add 1 tsp. of water per cup of sugar. You may need more than this if it doesn't fill up your mold. Put in a few drops of food coloring, starting with three and working up if you want it darker.

    • 3

Work through the mixture with your hands until all the water absorbs into the sugar. Pick up a hand full of the sugar mixture and squeeze together. If it holds the shape, the mixture is ready.

    • 4

Pack the sugar mixture into both halves of the egg mold. Use a flat-sided spatula to level off the mold.

    • 5

Place the egg halves on a plate and lift off the mold. Let the sugar sculpture dry at room temperature. The time varies with humidity, but it generally takes several hours.

    Decorate the Egg Sculpture

    • 6

Lift up the sugar egg halves and scoop out the insides with a spoon, leaving ¼ to ½ inch of shell around the scooped area. Smooth the inside area with the back of the spoon you are using.

    • 7

Decorate the inside of the bottom egg half with Easter grass, toys and anything else that comes to mind. Put the top half over the decorated half of the egg, securing them together.

    • 8

Cut a 2-inch area from the front point of the egg to give a fuller opening for viewing your decorations.

    • 9

Embellish the outside of the egg halves with decorative icing. Use royal icing so that it will harden and not attract ants. Pipe a decorative ribbon running around the egg where the two halves meet. Lastly, create your own choice of floral and ribbon decoration on top of the egg.
