How to Hook a Sand Crab

Fishermen use sand crabs as bait for a number of tasty fish, such as perch, corbina and yellowfin. Hooking sand crabs is challenging though if you've never done it. The sharp edge of the crab's shell can make it a little tricky to hook it.

Instructions

    • 1

Grab the sand crab carefully by the outer edges of its shell. Be wary of the claws and legs. Sand crabs don't like being picked up and will flail and kick ferociously.

    • 2

Pierce the rear two legs of the crab with the hook. You will have to apply a small bit of pressure to pull the tip of the hook completely through the legs. Piercing the sand crab through the legs will not kill the sand crab; therefore, it will wiggle on the hook, which will attract the larger fish. Be careful not to pierce your finger, as the fishing hook is sharp.

    • 3

Pull the hook through the center underbelly of the crab. Apply pressure to break through the shell cleanly. Do this in one swift motion to minimize the damage to the sand crab.

    • 4

Push the curved tip of the hook through the top part of the sand crab shell. Be prepared for resistance as the top shell is quite hard. Pull the hook through far enough so that at least ΒΌ of it is available. This will make it easier to catch larger fish with the sand crab as bait.

    • 5

Go out and catch larger fish with your newly hooked sand crab as bait.
