How to Work in a School Library After School
Extra curriculur activities are an important part of high school. Most students decide to go out for sports, participate in chorus or school plays or get involved in school politics, like student government. Other students want to get involved in things that will prepare them for tomorrow, such as debate or working in the school library. Everything you do can prepare you for the world, so decide what's best for you.

See your advisor and see if there are openings in the school library. If there are, talk to the school librarian and see if she can use you after school.

Get your foot in the door. There are many valuable things you can learn working in the library, so do your best to accommodate the librarian. Offer to work during your study periods or before school if this will get you in the door.

Familiarize yourself with the library. You need to know the order of the books in the library. They have sections for fiction, reference books, biographies and non-fiction.

Do the jobs assigned to you. The first assignment you will be given is to put the books back where they belong. You not only need to know what section each book goes to, but how to arrange them on the shelves. Be sure to find out how the system used to shelve books in the school library. The Library of Congress classification system is the usual method.

Replace the magazines and periodicals that are sitting out to their original places. Another job for students to do is not only shelving books but also magazines, newspapers and periodicals. You may also need to deliver the circulated magazines to teachers. You also need to put CDs, DVDs and videos where they belong.

Update the online card catalog. Librarians have many jobs and are sometimes too busy to update the card catalog when new books come in; therefore, this is a job that can fall to students working in the school library.
