Adobe Audition, formerly known as Cool Edit Pro, is a incredibly user-friendly software that lets you create multi-track recordings, convert sound files to MP3, Wav or whatever other format you need or want and a variety of other audio functions. If you have favorite CD tracks or even vinyl or cassette recordings that you would like to use on your iPod, for example, here’s how to make MP3s of your favorite recordings using Adobe Audition.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A PC
  • Your favorite recordings on CD, tape or vinyl
  • Adobe Audition software (also known as Cool Edit Pro)
  1. Step 1

Open up the "Edit Wave Form View" on the screen (the square icon found just underneath the word File at the top left of the screen). If you are converting a track from a vinyl record or cassette, you’ll have to record the track in real time. Simply hit the "Record" button on Audition screen and let the track play to its completion.

  2. Step 2

If you are converting CD tracks to MP3, you can place the CD in your PC, right click on the "CD" icon in My Computer, click "Open" and when the list of tracks appears (usually Track 1, Track 2 and so on) you can click and drag the track into the "Audition" screen where it will download automatically, eliminating the need to sit through the playing of the entire track to get the finished sound wave.

  3. Step 3

Once you have the sound wave in Audition, you can either save it as is, or you do a little “clean up” If you see blank space at the beginning and/or end of the sound file, you can “trim” that space away by simply left clicking, dragging and highlighting the space, then hit the "Delete" button on your PC keyboard. If you prefer not to do any trimming, you’re ready to save the file.

  4. Step 4

Go to the "File" menu, scroll down to "Save as." The screen that appears will give you the option to select a name for your file (the song name is usually the best bet) at the bottom where it says "File Name," just below that you will see "Save as Type." Make sure that you choose "MP3PRO" as your format, then just click "OK." The machinery will do the work and you will have converted your favorite recording into an MP3 using Adobe Audition.
