Soft cotton facial masks are used to maintain a youthful and smooth face. Many are manufactured for use in Japanese spa treatments, but others are adopting the practice rapidly. Of the many brands on the market, most are sold precut and moisturized with nutrients. Soft cotton facial masks typically have expiration dates listed on the packaging and should be used before that date in most cases. Brands without expiration dates should be avoided. There are a number of varieties on the market, ranging in price from about $1 to $20 per mask.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a time to use your soft cotton facial mask when you will not be disturbed for approximately 30 minutes. While you can perform some light activities, such as reading, while wearing the mask, strenuous movement should be avoided. Many brands recommend using the time for resting and relaxing.

  2. Step 2

Wash your face thoroughly. Remove any makeup, as well as dirt and oil, from your skin.

  3. Step 3

Remove your soft cotton facial mask from its packaging, and place it on your face. You may need to use a mirror to ensure that the mask fits your face correctly, and you must remove any air bubbles so that the nutrients in the mask can reach your entire face.

  4. Step 4

Wear the mask for the length of time specified on the packaging. For most brands, masks are to be worn approximately 15 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Remove the used facial mask, and rinse your face. You can throw away the mask after use. You can also use it to moisturize other areas on your body, such as the back of your neck.

  6. Step 6

Avoid using masks outside or in direct sunlight. They can rapidly collect dust and other chemicals, making the facial treatment far less effective.

Tips & Warnings
  • While Japanese brands remain the most popular for soft cotton face masks, a number of Korean masks are cheaper and equally effective.
  • You can lengthen the shelf life of your soft cotton masks by storing them in a cool place, such as your refrigerator. If stored properly, a mask can last past the expiration date listed on the packaging.
  • Avoid buying facial masks on eBay and other auction sites. Some sellers routinely list knockoff or imitations of well-known brands that may contain harmful chemicals.
  • Some inexpensive masks have minimal effects. A few contain nothing more than water and fragrance, rather than the nutrients and moisturizers of high-quality masks.
