How to Use Photoshop to Create Textures With Alpha Channels

One of the many remarkable features of Photoshop is the ability to create textures in images using elements called alpha channels. Each of the primary colors in an image is considered its own channel, which contains a certain number of pixels depending on how many different hues exist. An alpha channel is an additional grey-colored channel that can be used to compare the amount of opacity in the other layers of an image. This might sound confusing, but it will make much more sense as you learn how to use Photoshop to create textures with alpha channels.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an image in which you would like to create texture and open it in Photoshop. The image you use should not contain any transparent pixels, which are sometimes used with images that are meant to be laid over an existing background. When working with alpha channels, any transparent pixels will automatically be converted to white pixels.

    • 2

Select "quick mask" mode by pressing "Q" on your keyboard or selecting it from the "Tools" menu in Photoshop. This will create a mask layer that covers the entire image. Use the "Paintbucket" tool to fill the entire layer with the color black. The entire image should turn red, which means that the entire layer is technically transparent.

    • 3

Learn to associate the color white with being opaque and the colors black and red with being transparent when working with alpha channels. Use the "Paintbrush" tool to paint any areas in your mask layer in which you want to create texture. When you are finished, choose "Save Selection As Channel" from the "Layers" menu to save your mask layer as a channel.

    • 4

Click on your new layer (which should be called "Alpha1") from the "Layers" window and right-click on the title. Click on the "Filters" menu and select "Texturizer."

    • 5

Review the list of available textures to find your desired result. A wide range of textures is available, including 3-D effects and different gradient fills. Select your desired option and the areas of your layer that you have painted white will be filled with this texture.

    • 6

Choose different colors from the color palette to change the hue of your texture layer. You will need to choose your desired color before applying the texture. Choose "Undo" from the "Edit" menu if you would like to go back and choose a new color.

    • 7

Save your image by selecting "Save As" from the "File" menu, making sure that you have selected the "Save Alpha Layers" checkbox on the "Save" menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Images with darker backgrounds work best when working with alpha channels because they tend to blend in well with different textures.
