Fall Out Boy is one of the best-known examples of the type of music (and social trend) known as emo. Their songs, style and attitude have made them representatives of the emo movement, and if someone wants to be emo, they could do worse than being emo like Fall Out Boy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dress up in the proper emo fashion. While Fall Out Boy members wear the typical emo style clothes, including tight jeans, thrift-store t-shirts, cross-trainer sneakers or well-worn dress shoes and short sleeves, they also have included little twists on emo fashion that they like. For instance, Fall Out Boy's lead singer Patrick Stump is known for his fedora and sport coats, which give him the overall appearance of a Prohibition-era gangster in his music videos.

  2. Step 2

Cultivate the right attitude for being emo. Emo boys and girls are known as shy, introspective people, who are emotionally sensitive and susceptible to being hurt. Get in touch with your feelings instead of trying to hide them, and if you happen to be shy naturally, you have a natural inclination towards being emo.

  3. Step 3

Get a tattoo. All of Fall Out Boy's members have some sort of tattoo that represents something important to them.

  4. Step 4

Copy Fall Out Boy's talent for using literary devices in their songs. Fall Out Boy's songs are full of ironic references, metaphors and dry humor to get across their point. Work hard in creative writing and English courses, enroll in some extracurricular writing clubs and write out some original works in order to hone your writing skills.

  5. Step 5

Have a sense of humor about being emo. One of Fall Out Boy's most endearing traits is that they don't take themselves too seriously, as they demonstrate in music videos where they get insulted by monkeys and utterly fail to blend in such sites as the inner city and the Playboy Mansion. So learn to laugh at yourself, and be a little self-deprecating, like Fall Out Boy can be.

Tips & Warnings
  • Being emo can be extremely comforting, especially for a teenager, since it encompasses all the doubt and uncertainty that goes along with adolescence. However, being emo is often also seen as being goth, and some people lump the two categories in together.
  • Being emo is eventually going to go out of style. Be prepared for the moment when it happens, and be forewarned that eventually emo is going to be mocked.
