How to Receive Military Discounts

The United States military offers many benefits to service personnel, including the ability to obtain special rates from various retailers in the United States. These discounts are available for those who are eligible and often apply to their families.

Step1
Find out if you are eligible to apply for a military ID. Certain members of a service member's family can apply for the ID and receive some of its benefits. Eligible family members are include the spouse of the service person, the widow of the service person who has not remarried, unmarried children aged 10 to 21, children over 21 who are disabled and parents who receive over half of their income from a child in military service.
Step2
Present your military ID. Many retailers reserve special discounts for military personnel who can produce. this proof of service.
Step3
Print discount coupons from participating retailers at military websites online. Military.com maintains a list of printable coupons from over 700 retailers (see Resources below). You can also use some of the coupon codes online at the retailer's website.
Step4
Examine the discount coupons. Learn how to use the coupon, whether online or at the stores, and be sure you are eligible to use it. Some of these coupons are reserved for those in active duty only while others are open to everyone else, including veterans, military family members and military personnel in the reserves.
Step5
Shop at the Commissary and the Post Exchange. The Commissary (for groceries) and the Post Exchange (a department-style store) are shops for members of the military and their families and can be found at each post. You will need to present your military ID at checkout.
Step6
Stay current. Visit websites that provide information about military discounts often to take advantage of new discounts as they become available. Websites such as Military Times, MilitaryNow.com and MilitarySpot.com update their listings regularly (see Resources below).
