How to Use Curry to Treat Alzheimer's

In countries that use curry powder as staple, Alzheimer's Disease if fairly uncommon. Many medical studies have shown that the turmeric plant, where curry originates, may help flush cancer cells from the body. Additional research shows that turmeric also reduces swelling in brain tissue, which may explain the link between eating curry and a lower incidence of Alzheimer's.

Things You'll Need:

  • Physician or health care professional
  • Curry or turmeric powder
  • Herbal supplements with curcuminoids or curcumin
  • Foods with turmeric, such as mustard
  1. Step 1

    Increase your consumption of turmeric. Most Western dishes do not contain this spice, so you should learn how to cook Indian and Thai dishes, or frequent restaurants serving these ethnic cusines. Add curry powder to such dishes as rice, soup or meat dishes.

  2. Step 2

    Buy herbal supplements that contain standardized turmeric extract. Look for a product that contains a high level (90 percent or more) of curcuminoids, the antioxidant compound in curry that is thought to be beneficial to the treatment of degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's. Note that many herbal supplements refer to curcuminoids as curcuminutes

  3. Step 3

    Eat other foods that contain high levels of turmeric. Organic mustards, for example, usually contain turmeric, as do some salad dressings.

  4. Step 4

    Use online resources, such as the VitaCost website, to purchase herbal supplements containing turmeric or concentrated curcuminoids (see Resources below). Many of these herbal supplements contain additional compounds, such as black pepper extracts, to increase absorption into the gastrointestinal tract.

Tips & Warnings
  • Initial studies have shown that the frequent use of curry in foods may not only prevent the occurrence of Alzheimer's, but reverse some of the effects in existing patients as well.
  • Check with your doctor before you take turmeric or curry extract, or any other concentrated form of the spice. These supplements may aggravate diabetes and high blood pressure.
