Things You'll Need:
- Physician or health care professional
- Curry or turmeric powder
- Herbal supplements with curcuminoids or curcumin
- Foods with turmeric, such as mustard
-
Step 1
Increase your consumption of turmeric. Most Western dishes do not contain this spice, so you should learn how to cook Indian and Thai dishes, or frequent restaurants serving these ethnic cusines. Add curry powder to such dishes as rice, soup or meat dishes.
-
Step 2
Buy herbal supplements that contain standardized turmeric extract. Look for a product that contains a high level (90 percent or more) of curcuminoids, the antioxidant compound in curry that is thought to be beneficial to the treatment of degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's. Note that many herbal supplements refer to curcuminoids as curcuminutes
-
Step 3
Eat other foods that contain high levels of turmeric. Organic mustards, for example, usually contain turmeric, as do some salad dressings.
-
Step 4
Use online resources, such as the VitaCost website, to purchase herbal supplements containing turmeric or concentrated curcuminoids (see Resources below). Many of these herbal supplements contain additional compounds, such as black pepper extracts, to increase absorption into the gastrointestinal tract.
