Pottery can greatly enhance the look of a room, or serve as the focal point of a fine art collection, but you must maintain it to keep or increase its value. Rust accumulation can be an issue for certain types of pottery, but you can easily remove it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid dish detergent
  • Rust cleaner
  • Denture cleaner
  • Baking soda
  • Hard rubber eraser
  • Soft makeup brush
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  1. Step 1

Use hot, soapy water to clean your pottery before trying a stronger product. Wear gloves so you can get the water very hot and mix the water with 1 tbsp. of mild liquid dish detergent.

  2. Step 2

Buy a commercial product like Lime Away with Rust Remover or CLR. Check the product label to make sure it will not damage glazing.

  3. Step 3

Submerge the pottery in a plastic bucket with the rust cleaner and the amount of water recommended by the product's instructions. If the object is too big to be submerged, take a washcloth dipped in the rust cleaner and gently rub the pottery with it.

  4. Step 4

Use denture cleaner to remove rust stains. Place 2 denture tablets, in 3 oz. of water and let them sit for a few minutes. Rub a soft rag dipped in the solution over the pottery. Rinse the pottery and dry it.

  5. Step 5

Clean with baking soda. You can either make a paste with baking soda and water or dilute it further by mixing 1 tbsp. of baking soda to 4 tbsp. of water. Gently rub the cleanser on your pottery, rinse and pat dry.

  6. Step 6

Remove small spots of rust with a hard rubber eraser. Use a circular motion and do not rub with too much force. This is good only for small rust lines. Brush away residue with a soft makeup brush when finished.

  7. Step 7

Apply toilet bowl cleaner. First spot clean a small area of the pottery with a rag dipped in undiluted cleaner. Do not allow the cleaner to remain on the product for more than 2 minutes. Rinse with cool water and dry with a clean rag.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean the crevices of your pottery.
  • Do not use bleach to clean your pottery, or it will damage the finish.
