Step 1
Straight Needle Sets – Make sure you choose needles that are long enough to handle most projects. Ten-inch needles may be fine for many projects, but if you knit a lot of big projects, like sweaters and such, you may find 14-inch sizes are more to your needs.
-
Step 2
Double-Pointed Needles – Make sure you choose needles that are uniform in size and shape, and come in sizes 0 through 15, so you can be sure you have the right size for every project. Nine-inch needles are a good length for most projects. Make sure there are five needles to every set.
-
Step 3
Circular Needles – You can buy an entire set of circular needles from 0 through 15. If you do, make sure the needles are high-quality, such as Addi Turbo if you like metal, or Clover Bamboo if you like bamboo needles. Make sure you buy needles with cords that are long enough for most average projects, such as 29- or 32-inch cords.
-
Step 4
Adjustable Circular Needle Sets – These needle sets come in needle sizes 1 through 15, and include several cords that attach to the needles. Make sure you buy a set that has tighteners (like a little wrench), so you can make sure the needle and cord are joined as tightly as possible. If not, you may find the needle unscrewing from the cord while you knit, and that's a good way to lose a lot of stitches.

Step 5
By choosing the right knitting needle sets for your needs, you'll make sure you always have just the right needle for every project on your knitting to-do list.
