Nashville may be dubbed “Music City,” but the creative talent in central Tennessee spans far beyond songwriting. Follow these simple steps for a unique glimpse of downtown Nashville’s most talented artists and collectors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Park in a metered spot or an area pay lot and start at The Arts Company at 215 5th Avenue North. If you’re at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, you will already be on 5th Avenue North, so simply walk up the hill for this first stop. Featuring original and contemporary paintings, sculptures, photography and mixed media in a 6,000-square-foot exhibition hall, this two story historic building is the perfect starter gallery for taking in Nashville’s young talent. The first Saturday of every month, owner Anne Brown hosts a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. for area artists and art lovers alike.

  2. Step 2

Move on to your next gallery. Located just a few doors down at 83 Arcade Building (still on 5th Avenue North), TAG art gallery is an ideal next step on your crawl. Offering affordable pieces to emerging collectors, artists who display at TAG merge beautiful and strange with contemporary paintings, drawing, printmaking, photography and sculpture by artists who have already made a name for themselves. TAG works with more than 50 artists from Nashville, New Orleans, New York City, Maryland, Texas and more.

  3. Step 3

Walk two blocks to Sixth Avenue North, just before it intersects with Church Street, for The Rymer Gallery next to the Hermitage Hotel. Most famous for his intricate sculptures made out of crayons, here local artist Herb Williams shows off his “Popsolete Blingfish” collection of enamel album colors. For a complete list of artists and their work, visit the Rhymer website, listed in the Resources section below.

  4. Step 4

Finish at The Frist. Walk down Church Street away from the riverfront, take a left on Eighth Avenue then a right on Broadway. Originally a post office commissioned by President Hoover, The Frist Center for the Visual Arts has a Greco-Roman exterior and has all of the original interior ornamentations inside with the exception of the glass doors to the gift shop. Even the light fixtures and aluminum alloy designs are original.
