1
scrub brush
The most inexpensive way to shampoo a carpet would be to get a scrub brush and oxy clean. Mix the oxy clean in hot water and scrub away(some prefer a broom for this step). Wait until it dries and vacuum up.

2
woolite
The most inexpensive and less back breaking way to shampoo a carpet would be to get a scrub brush and carpet cleaner solution. One you can spray on is preferred. I recommend woolite deep cleaning with oxy booster. It works great and easy to do. Spray the solution on your carpet, scrub areas that are real bad(Again I have seen women use brooms for this step) and let sit the time it recommends and vacuum up.

shampooer
Another way (a little more costly) is to rent a shampooer from your local walmart or grocery store and buy the expensive solution to put in it and shampoo your carpets this way. Make sure when using this step to always go in the same direction with the shampooer it will help you to keep track of what's wet and what's not with the tracks it leaves.

carpet cleaners
The most costly way to shampoo your carpets is not to do it yourself but to hire someone to do it for you. It does cost quite a bit but it saves you time and back breaking work.
