Step 1
Observe chairs wherever you go. If you are at a friend's house or at a store, look at the chair, touch the chair, flip the cushion on it and inspect it closely. Look for anything that would tell you that this is a bad chair for you. Check under the cushion for easily visible stains. Look for a chair that hides stains or is easy to clean.
-
Step 2
Measure where the chair will sit in your house or office so you can get one that fits the space as well as fitting your body shape and size. Measure the door width to make sure you can get the chair into the space. Older homes have narrower doorways than today's standard 32-inch door width.

Step 3
Go shopping. Look for a style and fabric you like. Get an idea of what type of chair you are looking for. Take your best friend, husband and kids with you. Have each person sit in the chair. If the chair is only for you, go alone so you have no distractions while picking out the right chair. Go to the pricier stores first, then look at alternative stores for a similar chair. Check out overstocked merchandise at the outlet store or at stores like Ikea.

Step 4
Ask the salesperson for any available discounts. Most department store salespeople can take an automatic 10 percent off of merchandise without a manager's OK. If you are paying cash (not financing your purchase), you might be able to get an even lower price.

Step 5
Check for blemishes on the furniture before you go home or when the chair is unloaded. Do not accept damaged furniture. The delivery service is often outsourced and can't approve a refund or discount, but can take the chair back upon arrival if damaged.
