Instructions

    • 1

Create a new functional space in an existing area. Unused attic space is a wonderful place to put a new bedroom.

    • 2

Put drywall up on any unfinished walls, such as a closet turned into a hallway to the new bedroom. Cover the seams and nail holes of the drywall with paper tape or fiberglass mesh tape.

    • 3

Apply a thin coating of joint compound over the tape and let dry. Sand down the joint compound and repeat application twice more for a total of three times, then apply texture.

    • 4

Add a closet within the new bedroom. Frame out the closet area. Measure and cut drywall to fit the space. Be sure to leave room for a doorway for the closet. Finish these new walls in the same way as before with tape and joint compound.

    • 5

Cover exposed attic rafters by attaching drywall to them and create a ceiling. Put insulation between the rafters to help keep the room at a constant temperature and to save on energy.

    • 6

Attach doors to the new bedroom and to the closet.

    • 7

Finish the walls once completely dry with a specialty paint finish like a faux finish.
