The air filter on a motorcycle needs to be cleaned, or replaced, often if you are a regular or sport rider. This process is fairly simple if you are familiar with the parts on the motorcycle and have the appropriate tools handy. This process is for the reusable filters.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Performance oil kit
  • Warm soapy water
  • Hose or sink
  • Clean rag
  1. Step 1

Remove the bolt, or bolts, in the cover. Depending on your motorcycle or after-market accessories, there may be more than the single bolt cover to worry about. You want to expose the air filter and take it out. There should also be an air filter cleaner, which can be cleaned.

  2. Step 2

Use a cleaning solution, or warm and soapy water, to spray on the filter, cleaning around the outside and inside. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Place the end of a hose inside the filter and turn it on slowly. This can also be done in a sink with the faucet on the inside. Rinse off the soapy water, or cleaner, from the inside of the filter allowing it to flow through to the outside of the filter.

  3. Step 3

Set the filter out on a clean surface and allow it to dry for 30 to 45 minutes, or until dry. Since these are a gauze type filter, it should dry completely with no dissolving or sticking together.

  4. Step 4

Use an oil kit, which includes the air filter cleaner and air filter oil. Spray with the air filter cleaner and allow to dry, this should only take a few moments. Holding the air filter oil four to five inches away, spray lightly. Wipe off the excess oil with a rag and reinstall the filter on to the motorcycle.
