How to Do a Rugby Maul
The rugby maul is when you take the ball into play and keep it up off the ground during contact. The person holding the ball cannot run because three or more players on his team and at least one player from the opposing team surround and hold him. The idea is to move the entire formation towards the try line and then get the ball out in order to score.

Join the maul from behind the player holding the ball. Joining in from the side of the maul is cause for a penalty.

Keep your head and shoulders above your hips when participating in a maul. Dropping below the hips is grounds for a penalty.

Maintain contact with at least one arm bound to a teammate at all times.

Continue to keep the maul moving or else the referee may call "Use it or lose it" to the offensive team. That team has 5 seconds to pass the ball or else the referee calls a scrum and the other team is given the feed.

Watch the off-sides line. It is the point of the hindmost foot of the last player in the maul.

Continue the maul until the ball is passed or has touched the ground.

Be aware of the most common maul-related penalties, such as deliberately collapsing the maul, purposely screening the player who has the ball, not endeavoring to stay on your feet and, as previously mentioned, not keeping your head and shoulders above hip level.
