Buying clothes is hard enough, but if one is vertically challenged, or a little on the short side, none of the garment lengths will be correct. By knowing how to hem a garment, one can purchase the desired outfit and adjust the garment to the necessary length.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garment to be hemmed
  • Straight pins
  • Ruler
  • Full length mirror
  • Ironing board
  • Steam iron
  1. Step 1

Put on the garment to be hemmed. Determine desired length and fold material toward the inside of garment, with wrong sides of fabric facing one another. Place a pin in the garment to mark hem line location. Carefully remove outfit.

  2. Step 2

Measure the length to be hemmed. Go around the edge, folding desired length of material toward inside of garment. The wrong sides of the fabric will be facing each other. Pin in place. Try on outfit to see if the hemline is correct.

  3. Step 3

Iron edge to create a crease. Model outfit once more to ensure correct placement of hemline.

  4. Step 4

Cut material to extend two inches below the crease line. Refold material on crease line. Fold 1 inch from the edge of material toward inside of hem, with wrong sides of material facing each other. This hides the raw edge inside the hem, preventing future raveling, and creates a neat one inch hem around the garment.

  5. Step 5

Pin at one inch intervals around diameter of garment. Make sure to insert pin through all three layers of material. Insert pins perpendicular to edge with pin heads all facing in one direction. Iron garment to create a crease.

  6. Step 6

Try on outfit again. Use a full length mirror to check if hem line looks even and at desired length.

  7. Step 7

    Make adjustments if necessary.
