This is an old southern tradition. It is said that if you eat Hoppin Johns for New Years it will bring you wealth and good luck for the whole year.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1lb. black eyed peas
  • 1c. of rice
  • onion (chopped)
  • 2 or 3 tomatoes(diced)
  • boiling meat (neckbones,hog maws,fat back,pigs feet or tails)
  1. Step 1

    Make sure you wash you peas good so you get all the rocks and stems out of them. Soak your peas over night so it wont take all day to cook.

  2. Step 2

    Put the peas and boiling meat in the pot and cook it down on low for about an hour as the peas burst and starts to make a gravy throw in the onions diced tomatoes and rice.

  3. Step 3

    Cover the pot and turn the flame down low until the rice swells up.

Tips & Warnings
  • We like to serve Hoppin Johns with fried chicken,collard greens and corn bread!
