Step 1
Learn the pros of riding bareback. Many experts believe bareback riding helps riders get better balance when riding, and it teaches you how to ride a horse without stirrups. When you talk to your dad, let him know riding bareback will make you a better rider in general.
-
Step 2
Enlist the help of your riding instructors. Perhaps they could write a letter to your father explaining why learning to ride bareback is good for you.
-
Step 3
Ask your father why he's so against riding bareback. Maybe he has safety concerns or doesn't understand why you'd want to ride bareback. Be prepared to address any issues you think he has with you riding bareback.
-
Step 4
Write out what you're going to say, so if you become emotional, you won't forget anything.
-
Step 5
Prove to your father you're growing into a mature adult. For a few weeks before you ask, make sure you're doing your chores without being asked, getting your homework done, and not mouthing off.
-
Step 6
Make an appointment to talk to your dad. Tell him you have something important to talk about with him and you'd like all of his attention. Don't make the appointment when his favorite TV show is on or when he usually goes out with his friends. Reschedule the meeting if your dad had a hard day and isn't receptive to talking to you.
-
Step 7
Ask for a compromise. If he wants you to be a better rider before you ride bareback, make him commit to another three months or six months of riding lessons. If he wants your grades to improve, promise you'll improve them over the next semester or quarter.
