How to Make a Cursor in Flash

Flash is an animation software that allows you to build custom elements for your website. Some web designers prefer to use Flash rather than HTML because the final result tends to be richer than HTML. You can use Flash to make a custom cursor that gives your website some extra flair.

      Open Flash and create a new file. Under "Properties," change your frame rate to at least 30 frames per second to create a smooth effect.

      Draw your cursor. You can use any of your drawing tools, such as the "Pencil" or "Paintbrush."

      Select your cursor with the "Selection" tool. Then click "Modify" and "Convert to Symbol." In the "Convert to Symbol" box, choose "Movie Clip" as the type of symbol and select the upper left-hand box in "Registration." Click "OK."

      Keep your cursor selected and click on "Properties." Name your cursor "cursor_mc". Omit the double quotation marks when you enter the code.

      Create a new layer by clicking "Insert Layer." On the new layer, right click to display a menu and select "Actions." This will bring up an "ActionScript" panel.

      Type the following code into the "ActionScript" panel "'cursor_mc.startDrag("true");' ". Type under the first code "'Mouse.hide();' ". Omit the double quotation marks when you enter the code.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pressing "Control" and "A" on your keyboard selects everything in your open file.

  • Hitting "F8" automatically brings up the "Convert to Symbol" window.
