Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Remove the closet's contents to weed out forgotten items that your teen no longer wants. Sort the remaining items into piles to determine how much room each type will require in the reorganized space. Consider clothes, shoes, accessories and other items like games, photo albums and memorabilia.
Step2
Find ways to maximize closet space. If she needs to hang a lot of clothes, for example, consider installing a second rod to accommodate 2 layers of shirts and pants sorted by type, style or color. Install a row of hooks along the back wall to hang bags and hats.
Step3
Purchase containers to stack and store items efficiently. Try clear drawer units (as opposed to boxes that have to be unstacked and restacked repeatedly) to group accessories by type or color. Hang soft-sided sweater shelves to hold clothes and even piles of school supplies, magazines and memorabilia. Place shoe racks along the floor to sort pairs by style.
Step4
Add a clothes hamper or basket where it will be easy for your teen to toss items in (as opposed to on the bedroom floor).
