The wedding day is a time for celebration with family and friends. For many pet owners, including their furry loved ones seems to be natural when celebrating such a milestone. But because animals require special considerations and care when participating in a special event, you'll need to take extra steps to be sure your nuptials go off without a hitch. Follow these tips to include a pet in a wedding.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Choose your pet’s role carefully. Unless you’re planning a casual backyard affair, weddings are typically formal occasions, and your rambunctious puppy may not be calm enough to handle a trip down the aisle. Likewise, the cat you consider social and friendly may be inclined to hiss when strapped to a harness for the first time.
Step2
Talk your decision over with your bridal party. Although you may love your furry golden retriever, your maid of honor’s severe allergy may make for an awkward moment at the altar.
Step3
Dress your pet to impress. If your dog is walking you down the aisle, make sure he’s clad in a tux that matches the groom’s. If your cat is joining you at the reception, a white pearl or satin collar will have her formal-ready in no time.
Step4
Bring your pet’s favorite toy and treats. It may take some coaxing to get her down the aisle, and if she sees you or the groom holding the treat you normally reserve for special occasions, she’ll be more likely to focus on the task at hand.
Step5
Arrange for someone to be in charge of your pet during the wedding and to care for him after the wedding. You will be preoccupied and overwhelmed that day, and you want to be sure your furry friend is well cared for before and after the big event.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your venue to see whether animals are allowed. Many reception sites have rules against allowing pets, since it may be a health code violation if the site serves food.
  • If your pet is not allowed at your reception site or if you feel his behavior will interfere with the ceremony, consider including him in the pre-wedding photos instead. He may be more comfortable and better behaved in his own environment, and you’re sure to get some great pictures when he's more relaxed.
