Poofy hair was the most popular style in the 1980s, and while the crazy frizzed styles are best left in the past, a calmer poofy look is becoming popular once again. Sported by stars such as Goldie Hawn and Julia Roberts, you can makeover your hair for a controlled poofy look without ever stepping foot in a salon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Towel
  • Wide-toothed comb
  • Hairspray
  • Large mesh rollers
  1. Step 1

Wash your hair with your regular shampoo and then massage a conditioner into your locks, working from scalp to tips. Rinse all of the suds out of your hair with lukewarm water and then, for extra shine, finish your rinse with a splash of cold water. Make sure you do not wash your hair in hot water, as it can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause drying, breaking and split ends.

  2. Step 2

Dry your hair with a towel, massaging the towel gently into your scalp and scrunching the tips of your hair. Allow your hair to air-dry after towel drying. While it may seem tempting to blow dry your hair, it will quickly destroy your shiny locks and make it limp and lifeless.

  3. Step 3

Comb your hair gently once dry, working from tip to root until you have released all of the tangles and knots. Tip your head upside down and spray with an even mist of hairspray, but make sure not to overdo it, as you will be adding more spray later.

  4. Step 4

Curl your hair into the largest mesh rollers you can find, clipping them in place. Once your entire head of hair is up in rollers, add another even mist of hairspray and allow the rollers to set while you do your makeup and get dressed. The longer the rollers set, the better.

  5. Step 5

Release the curlers carefully and pick through your hair with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Large curlers will give your hair a natural and beautiful wave, the entire process giving your hair that stylish poofy look.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have naturally oily hair, it can be difficult to make your hair poofy. To make the process a bit easier, skip the conditioner when washing your hair.
