How to Perform a Double Time Step in Tap

You've mastered the single time step—shuffle, hop, step, flap, step—and now you're ready to move onto a double time step. The step is similar but adds an element to help you do the step faster and more fluidly. There are always multiple variations of a time step. For the double time step, these include the double shuffle and double stomp.

Instructions

    Perform a Double Shuffle Time Step

  1. Step 1

    Begin on a hard non-carpeted floor that isn't too slippery. Stand in front of a mirror and place your hands on your hips to focus on correct foot movement.

  2. Step 2

    Shuffle with the right foot. To shuffle, brush your right foot forward and back against the floor, making two sounds:shu-ffle.

  3. Step 3

    Hop on your left foot, making one tap sound with your whole foot.

  4. Step 4

    Flap with your right foot. Brush forward and step down making two sounds: fa-lap.

  5. Step 5

    Flap with your left foot. Brush forward and step down making two sounds: fa-lap.

  6. Step 6

    Step back slightly with your right foot, ending the double time step with one last sound. Repeat the whole combination on the left side, starting with a left shuffle. You should hear eight distinct sounds: shu-ffle, hop, fa-lap, fa-lap and step.

  7. Perform a Double Stomp Time Step

  8. Step 1

    Stomp with your right foot. A stomp hits the floor and comes up without bearing weight while a stamp stays on the floor. In this case, use a stomp.

  9. Step 2

    Brush back with the right foot.

  10. Step 3

    Hop on your left foot.

  11. Step 4

    Flap with your right foot.

  12. Step 5

    Flap with your left foot.

  13. Step 6

    Step onto your right foot to finish the step. Repeat the combination with on the left side beginning with a left stomp. You should hear eight distinct taps: stomp, brush, hop, fa-lap, fa-lap and step.
