Step 1
Master the basics of swimming before joining a synchronized swimming club. Many of the stunts you will perform require endurance and the ability to maneuver comfortably in the water. Take all the swimming lessons offered by your local community recreation commission.

Attend dance classes. A large part of synchronized swimming includes dance moves. A traditional foute on the dance floor, performed in the water, becomes a catalina. If you can do the stunt on the floor, you will know the correct body position when you're in the water.

Step 3
Cross train to build endurance. Synchronized swimming is a labor intensive sport. In addition to maintaining your body, often elevated partially above the water's surface, you must hold your breath for up to a minute while performing stunts. Developing that endurance through other sport training such as running, biking and distance swimming benefits your overall athletic ability.

Step 4
Stretch before entering the water every time you swim. Many compulsory and optional stunts require a total 180-degree split of the legs. Stretching will make your muscles and tendons flexible enough to perform the stunts correctly.

Step 5
Join a synchronized swimming team. Depending upon the team's rules, you may have to tryout before receiving approval. Under the direction of the USA Synchro organization, you can search for a club near you. (See Resources)
