How to Fight Soil Erosion on Slopes
Soil erosion, or the movement and displacement of top soil, is a serious environmental problem especially on slopes. The loss of topsoil due to erosion can affect the growth of crops and native plants, and it can clog streams and other waterways with displaced soil. Causes of soil erosion include gravity, wind and fast moving water. Follow these steps to help fight soil erosion on sloped areas. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Divert the flow of fast moving water away from the slope itself. Construct pipes or dig channels in the ground to carry the water away from the slope. This will prevent soil erosion on slopes due to the movement of water.
-
2
Cover the slope with vegetation. Plants and their roots are very effective in fighting soil erosion on slopes. The leaves, stems and roots of plants all help to hold soil particles in place on the slope. You can plant a variety of plants to help lessen erosion, including ground covers, grasses, trees and bushes.

3
Landscape the slope using strip landscaping. This type of landscaping consists of strips or lines of vegetation planted perpendicular to the slope along the slope's contour lines. Strip landscaping works well on very large slopes and helps slow the water flow down the slope, which lessens soil erosion. For even better soil erosion protection, plant grasses or other ground covers in between the strips.

4
Build terraces along on the slope. Terraces are flat steps built into the slope where you'll plant vegetation. Terraces (or tiers) are extremely effective in lessening soil erosion on slopes due to fast moving water.
