How to Talk Parents Into Letting One Buy an Old Computer

You've found a great deal on a computer and hope to buy it to do school work, play games and keep up with friends on the Internet. Your parents, however, are more cautious about the large purchase. Talk your mom and dad into agreeing to the investment with logical and well-researched reasons.

1. Demonstrate how a computer will help you in school with reports, homework and research. Acknowledge if you'll also be using it for recreational purposes, but promise them that gaming and chatting won't get out of hand.
2. Reveal how you've saved the money to buy the equipment or discuss items like software, upgrades and accessories that you'll pay for if you're asking them to fund the computer itself.
3. Show them the seller's positive feedback ratings for similar items if you want to buy the computer through an online auction. Tell them you'll use PayPal in case you need to take advantage of its buyer protection program. (See Resources)
4. Compare the price with similar new equipment to reveal the amount you'll save. Also discuss any warranties and service plans that will still be in effect when you buy the used computer.
5. Ask a computer technician or trusted relative who's an expert in the industry inspect the used computer to assure your parents that it operates properly, is reliable and up-to-date and a good buy. Remove any old photos, files or software that may be questionable to them first.
6. Tell them know that family members can also use the computer whenever it's available.
