How to Maintain Healthy Hair With Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone, slowing the metabolism and inhibiting the absorption of vitamins and minerals in the body. While hormone medications can help to regulate your symptoms, some, such as hair loss, can be particularly devastating. Fortunately, a few tips can help you get your healthy head of hair back.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Take daily supplements of evening primrose oil, a healthy oil rich in GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), and essential fatty acid which helps to promote hair growth. Always take evening primrose oil according to the manufacturer's directions.
Step2
Add more protein to your diet, as protein is an essential ingredient to healthy hair growth. While the amount of recommended protein varies, 0.5 grams of protein per every pound of body weight is a good place to begin. Choose healthy, low-fat protein sources, such as whey powder, poultry and fish.
Step3
Help your hair grow with a B complex vitamin supplement, as B vitamin deficiency is not only a symptom of hypothyroidism, it is also a cause of hair loss. For best results, choose a vitamin combination that contains B3 and B5 and follow the dosage recommended by the manufacturer.
Step4
Include more amino acids in your diet, particularly L-Cysteine and L-methionine, available in supplement form. Not only will these two amino acids help in hair growth, they will also help improve the course texture of your hair caused by hypothyroidism. Doctors recommend taking 500 mg of each amino acid twice daily on an empty stomach.
Step5
Massage your scalp while washing and conditioning your hair to help stimulate the follicles and promote hair growth. A few extra minutes in the shower to pamper yourself and your scalp can go a long way in regrowing your hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • While these tips and regular thyroid hormone treatment will eventually lead to a healthy head of hair, remember that hair growth takes time. Have patience and be constant with your treatments for the fastest and best results.
