Things You'll Need:
- Matches or a lighter
-
Step 1
Find your place to sleep, preferably under the shelter of heavy trees and bushes to help protect you from the wind and rain; however, the location should also be safe and suitable for building a fire.
-
Step 2
Gather rocks, choosing medium sized rocks to make a circular fire pit and a number of smaller rocks that will be used to line your warm bed. It can be difficult to find rocks in the wilderness, so once you find a few, dry dig a bit in the dirt for more of the same rocks that have become buried over time.
-
Step 3
Dig a shallow pit where you will be making your warm bed. You can use a knife, a sharp rock of even strong sticks to help make your pit. Once finished, the bed should be about 6 feet long, 2 or 3 feet wide and 4 inches deep.
-
Step 4
Build a fire in your circular fire pit. Once you have a strong fire burning, add more fuel and spread the fire out as much as possible using a long stick. Add the rocks you have gathered to the bottom of the fire and then make yourself something to eat or organize your camp as the fire is burning down.
-
Step 5
Gather the warm rocks from the bottom of the fire pit once your fire has burned down. You can use a tin can to scoop out hot rocks. If the rocks are too hot to touch and you do not have something to help remove them, throw a bit of loose dirt over the rocks. But only use enough to cool them to the touch.
-
Step 6
Transfer the warm rocks into your shallow pit, spacing them evenly. Cover the rocks with soil and then make your bed on top. The warmth of the rocks will rise to your bed, keeping you warm in the wilderness all night long.
