How to Make Safe Nail Polish

While many women love the look of painted nails, the chemical ingredients used to make nail polish are extremely toxic and can actually do more harm than good. While it is difficult to make safe nail polish at home that gives you the same look as traditional paints, you can create a gentle polish that will leave your nails brilliant, beautiful and shiny.

Things You'll Need

• Cold pressed olive oil
• Powdered white clay or kaolin clay
• Henna powder (optional)
• Cotton swabs
• Soft cotton cloth

Instructions

1. Mix 1 tbsp. cold pressed olive oil and 1/2 tbsp. of powdered white clay or kaolin clay until a smooth paste is created. The olive oil in your safe nail polish will help to moisturize both your nails and your cuticles while the clay will buff and shine the surface.

2. Add color to your safe nail polish by adding up to 1/2 tbsp. of henna dye. Henna comes in a variety of colors and when added to your nails will create a soft, natural color. When using henna, you may need to add a bit more olive oil to create an even paste.

3. Apply the polish to your nails evenly using an old nail polish brush or a cotton swab. If using henna, be careful to wipe away any splashes on your skin, or it will be tinted as well. Leave the polish on for about 15 minutes if you have not included henna.

4. Maintain the moisture in your safe nail polish if you have included henna. Dip a cotton swab in warm water and carefully dab the surface of the paste. Allow the henna to set for 1 hour or longer, depending on the deepness of color you are working towards.

5. Dip a cotton cloth in warm water and gently wipe away the paste once set. With the excess paste still on the cloth, massage your nails with circular motions to buff the surface. Once shining, use a clean cloth to remove any paste remaining. Repeat application of your safe nail polish as often as desired.
