How to Make Flowers From Old Bread

Flowers made from bread are very pretty and last longer than real flowers. This craft is a wonderful way to use old bread that would otherwise be thrown away. The flowers make a great gift and are an excellent craft project to do with children. After making your clay, you can make any number of projects with it. You don't have to limit yourself to just flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the crusts off of 7 slices of white bread. You do not use the crusts to make your flowers so you can throw them away, or better yet, feed them to the birds.

    • 2

Break the bread into tiny pieces or crumbs and put them into a bowl.

    • 3

Add 7 tsp. of white glue to the bread and mix well. If the mixture seems too dry, you can add a few drops of water. Knead the mixture until it forms a pliable clay.

    • 4

Put a few drops of oil color paint, in the color of your choice, into the dough. Knead it some more to work the color through evenly. Add more paint if the color is not dark enough and then knead again. If you want more than one color you need to make separate batches of dough.

    • 5

Roll a piece of dough between your hands to form a ball to use as the center of your flower. Use the palm of your hand to squish pieces of dough against the counter top to form petals. Attach the petals to the flower center and smooth out the gap between them so they adhere.

    • 6

Stick the top of an artificial flower stem into the center of the flower. Place the flowers in a vase, jar or other container so they dry upright.

    • 7

Spray your flowers with wood varnish, or dip them into a liquid varnish after they are completely dry. The varnish protects the bread flowers and makes them last longer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a few drops of floral scented oil to each flower after you are done varnishing them if you want them to smell like the real thing.
