Cookie cutter cookies, or butter cookies, aren't just for the holidays. People enjoy dessert any time of year, and homemade cookies taste so much better than store-bought ones. All you need to make your own cookie cutter cookies are a few basic ingredients, a working oven, your favorite cookie cutters and a decorative touch.

From Quick Guide: Christmas Cookies
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2-1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. almond or lemon extract (if desired)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon
  • Electric mixer
  • Plastic wrap
  • Cookie sheets
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Cooling rack
  • Spatula
  • Knife
  • Frosting
  • Sprinkles or other cookie decorations
  1. Step 1

Mix together the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Make sure the ingredients are creamed thoroughly. Blend in the flour, careful not to spill. If desired, add the almond or lemon extract.

  2. Step 2

Remove dough from mixing bowl, and use your hands to form the dough into 2 small balls. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap, and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F, and grease several cookie sheets. Remove dough from the refrigerator.

  4. Step 4

Sprinkle flour on the counter. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Dust cookie cutters with flour so they won't stick once you use them in the dough. Cut the cookies out of the dough.

  5. Step 5

Place cookie cut-outs on cookie sheets. Re-roll the dough until all dough is used. Don't forget to use both refrigerated pieces of dough.

  6. Step 6

Bake cookies for 20 to 25 minutes, and place the cookies on a cooling rack with a spatula. Once the cookies have cooled, cover them with frosting. Decorate the finished cookies with sprinkles or other cookie decorations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to allow for extra time to refrigerate the dough. This step is important because without it, the dough will stick to everything, including the cookie cutters.
  • Refrigerating the dough in 2 sections makes it easier to handle. Leave the second section of dough in the refrigerator while working on the first so it stays cold.
  • This is a great activity for kids to do. You can have them make cookies according to a theme, such as sports, or a holiday like Halloween. Many cooking stores sell cookie cutters based on themes.
  • Don't frost the cookies until they've cooled completely. Otherwise the frosting could melt and make a mess.
