Making your own confetti can save money. It's a simple craft project you can do with children. Confetti making encourages hand-eye coordination and improves dexterity.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper punch
  • Colored paper or poster board

    Newspaper Method

  1. Step 1

Place an old sheet or a plastic drop cloth on a craft table to protect the work area.

  2. Step 2

Spread newspaper flat on the table. Cover the paper with craft paint. Sprinkle with glitter if desired.

  3. Step 3

Allow the newspaper to dry completely. Flip the newspaper over and repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the opposite side of the paper.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 1 to 4 using more newspapers with different colors of paint.

  5. Step 5

Cut the papers into 1-inch squares to form confetti.

  6. Punch Method

  7. Step 1

Purchase colored paper or poster board and a paper punch. You don't need to buy expensive punches, a plain hole punch works just as well.

  8. Step 2

Punch holes side by side in the paper. Keeping them in neat rows will allow you to get the most confetti out of each sheet.

  9. Step 3

Empty the collection bin from time to time as you punch. Too many paper pieces can jam the punch and crinkle your confetti.

  10. Step 4

Repeat Steps 1 to 3 with other colors of paper. Mix the confetti well to combine the colors.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can color plain white paper with bright markers instead of using colored paper for the punch method.
  • Use rounded children's scissors for preschool children if they are the ones making the confetti. Larger scissors are more dangerous and difficult for small hands to manipulate.
  • The smaller the confetti, the more difficult the clean up. When working with small children, large confetti is best.
  • Always supervise small children when working with items such as glitter and paint. Ingesting these products can be hazardous.
