Theater actors are dedicated to their work. Many are willing to do their own stunts. Most, however, draw the line at decapitation. For this, you probably need a fake head. Most theaters don't have a large props and special effects department. Fortunately, in theater, the audience is a decent distance away and can't see the fine details. Here's an inexpensive way to make a convincing looking fake head.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Styrofoam head form
  • White latex paint
  • Flesh colored aerosol or airbrush paint
  • Makeup
  • Wig
  • Fake blood (optional)
  • Additional props (optional)
  1. Step 1

Obtain a Styrofoam head. You can find them online or at a design or hairdressing supply store. They come in both male and female models, so you should know what role your fake head will be playing.

  2. Step 2

Paint your head with several layers of latex paint to give it a smoother and more lifelike texture.

  3. Step 3

Spray the head with flesh toned paint. You can use a brush, but spraying with aerosol paint or using an airbrush will give a more believable look to the skin.

  4. Step 4

Give your head a makeover. Add wigs and makeup just as you would on an actor. If you're using the head as a replacement for a specific actor, be sure to use the same make up colors and application on both the head and the actor.

  5. Step 5

Add props to your fake head such as facial hair or glasses if your actor has them.

  6. Step 6

Supplement with some blood. If the head is going to be separate, rough up the neck area and add some fake blood. If your head is going to be traveling, you may want to hollow out your head and add some sand for or other weight of some sort. This keeps the head from bouncing unconvincingly and gives it a nice realistic thud when it hits the ground.
