How to Do a Front Tuck in Gymnastics

The front tuck is the basic movement comprising other, more intricate gymnastic moves. A lot of leg and abdominal strength necessary to perform the front tuck can be gained by doing squats and corkscrew pilates. During first attempts at the front tuck, you may want someone known as a spotter to act as a kind of safety net by placing one hand at your stomach and back.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch before doing any gymnastic move. Begin the front tuck by first running in a steady but fast pace, then leap forward with your body fully elongated.

    • 2

Send your body up as well as forward with a strong push from your feet. Try not to point your head in the direction of the floor but instead focus your eyes ahead.

    • 3

Position your arms above your head, then snap them with as much power as you can forward.

    • 4

Tuck your bended knees in close to your body, which causes you to speed up in your rotating movement.

    • 5

Extend your legs outward as you near the floor.

    • 6

Bend your knees slightly so as to soften the landing once you feet touch the floor.

    • 7

Use a springboards and foam training pits to practice the front tuck. The springboard can train you to launch from the floor in your initial jump by using only the muscles in your legs. Use foam training pits to avoid injury.
