Being able to divide fractions is an essential skill for succeeding in math. Learning to divide them by whole numbers is a good starting point, because whole numbers are simple and easy to understand. They're also the most practical numbers by which to divide fractions. Knowing how this simple process works comes in handy in all sorts of everyday situations as well, like cooking.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Write down the fraction on a piece of paper. It's a good idea to use pencil instead of pen, just in case you make a mistake and need to erase your work.

  2. Step 2

Write out another fraction next to the first. This new fraction's numerator should be "1," and its denominator should be your whole number.

  3. Step 3

Multiply the numerators of the two fractions together. Because the numerator of the second fraction is "1," the final product will simply be the same as the first numerator.

  4. Step 4

Multiply the denominators together. This is where the math may get a little tricky, but remember you can always use a calculator to help you out.

  5. Step 5

Simplify the resulting fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factors. This will be the result of dividing the original fraction by the whole number.

  6. Step 6

Use a calculator to convert your final fraction into a decimal.

  7. Step 7

Run the original dividend through a calculator to double-check your answer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you get stuck, remember that dividing a fraction by a whole number's the same thing as multiplying it by one over that number.
