The only way to ensure that you don't suffer the effects of smoking is to not smoke at all. But if you want to smoke occasionally with a group, there are steps you can take to lessen the harmful effects of smoking. Although most of the research that proclaims smoking a dangerous habit is based on heavy smokers, note that any exposure to smoking isn't healthy for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Smoke at different times of the day. This keeps you from associating certain activities or times of the day with smoking.
Step2
Restrict the number of cigarettes you smoke. Stop smoking completely if you notice a gradual increase in the number of times you light up every day.
Step3
Clean yourself up after you smoke. Use a mouthwash to rinse out your mouth and thoroughly wash your hands every time you finish smoking.
Step4
Hang out with non-smokers or occasional smokers. Avoid the temptation to smoke whenever your partner does.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only allow yourself to continue smoking more than two cigarettes per day for two weeks.
  • Smoke only in open areas--not in your car or in your home. It's too difficult to clean the smell from smoking out of these areas.
  • Set a daily and weekly limit on the number of cigarettes you smoke. Quit smoking when the number you set for yourself isn't enough.
