How to Give Self a Manicure Using Salon Techniques

Sometimes when you give yourself a manicure at home, it just doesn't look as good as when you get it done in a salon. By learning salon techniques, you can give yourself a much better looking manicure at a fraction of the price.

Things You'll Need:

• Nail polish remover
• Nail trimmer
• Nail file
• Cuticle stick
• Nail polish

1. Remove your nail polish. Before starting your own manicure, take a cotton ball and nail polish remover to get rid of your old polish.

2. Cut your nails to the length you desire with a nail trimmer. Check the length of the fingernails on both hands to make sure that they're the same.

3. Take a nail file and smooth down the cut nails. Use the nail file to get the nail shape you want.

4. Soak your hands in warm water for about 5 minutes. This loosens the skin around your cuticles. After your hands are softened, you can take a cuticle stick and push back the cuticles.

5. Moisturize your hands and nails. Rub a generous amount of hand cream on your nails and hands. This further softens the skin and also soothes any discomfort you may feel after using the cuticle stick.

6. Wash and dry your hands. Before you apply the new polish, you should wash your hands with a moisturizing soap. Use a clean towel to dry your hands thoroughly.

7. Apply your new nail polish color. Take your time and let each coat dry before applying a new one. Put on two coats of the color and then a clear top coat.

Tips & Warnings

• You can cut your cuticles, but this may cause more discomfort than using a cuticle stick to push them back.
