1
Obtain permission to shadow a police officer from the public affairs department of your local police department. If you know somebody on the job, ask for a referral and a reference.
-
2
Learn the rules before you begin your day with the officer. As an employer, the police department has certain rules and regulations that are covered by their liability insurance and can extend to visitors if you follow the guidelines and restrictions that you are given.

3
Show up early, dressed appropriately for the day. If you are going to be with a police officer who routinely walks a lot, be sure to wear good walking shoes. You'll need rain gear if it's going to rain and a jacket to withstand the weather. If you are missing something important, you will have time to retrieve it if you arrive early.
-
4
Follow all the instructions given to you by the police officer during the job shadow. If he tells you to stay put, don't move. If you are asked to remain silent, don't speak. Run if you are told to run.
-
5
Ask when you are unsure of how to act in certain situations. Most police officers who offer to let someone shadow them are eager to educate their shadow and appreciate good questions.
