You can create a piece of modern patchwork art similar to that found in Access Space in Sheffield, England. To make the patchwork you piece each of the 216 colors of the HTML hexadecimal system into a tapestry. Each individual hexagon has the color embroidered on it as well as other personalized motifs.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Print off a copy of the hexadecimal color chart. This gives you all of the colors of fabric you need for your HTML patchwork.

  2. Step 2

Take the color chart with you to the fabric store. You only need small pieces of fabric, but you need 216 pieces. You may not be able to purchase all the colors in one store.

  3. Step 3

Purchase an acrylic hexagon template from a quilting store. These come in different sizes, so choose a size appropriate for your patchwork project. If you prefer, you can create your hexagon from a sheet of stiff plastic instead.

  4. Step 4

Cut out the pieces for the patchwork project. Remember to allow a ¼ inch seam allowance around the edge of the template. Cut each piece precisely so that it fits with the pieces next to it.

  5. Step 5

Put the embroidery hoop on one hexagon. Choose a contrasting color of embroidery floss. Thread two strands of the floss into a needle. Embroider the color number on the piece of fabric. Create whatever other designs you wish. Continue this step until you label all 216 HTML colors.

  6. Step 6

Fold the ¼ inch seam allowance around each piece. Press it with a steam iron if desired. Stitch each piece to its corresponding piece by hand using the regular thread and needle. Be sure to keep each piece in line and the points joining at the proper place.

  7. Step 7

Press the final patchwork project. Hang it for display as it is or continue piecing it into a quilt top.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can let your friends help embroider the patches. Let them have some of the hexagons and some floss and tell them to be creative.
  • If you would rather not embroider the patchwork blocks, you can use fabric markers.
