The high school years have many special events that teenagers want to be a part of, such as attending a Homecoming Dance. This could be a first date for many high school students and part of going to Homecoming is getting permission to go from your parents. Preparation is your key when it's time to ask parents to allow you to go to Homecoming. Use the following to help you prepare for that conversation with the parents

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather information about the Homecoming Dance and related festivities. Find out the date, the hours of the dance, the location, transportation to and from and any costs for tickets regarding the Homecoming Dance. You need to have your information and facts all together before you talk to your parents and do this in as far in advance as possible.

  2. Step 2

Plan your finances to budget whether or not you can afford to attend Homecoming. If not, you'll be depending on your parents to foot the bill. Think about the money issue from your parent's point of view. You may have to plan to work a few more hours at your part time job to earn extra money for Homecoming expenses. For the guys, you'll need to pay for your date's tickets, her meal and her homecoming mum. For the girls, you'll need to have a dress, shoes, hair and nail expenses. You need to have a plan to pay for the expenses before you talk to your parents.

  3. Step 3

Ask your parents for a time that would be convenient for them to have a family discussion. If you live in a busy household, it really is better to plan a time for everyone to sit down and talk.

  4. Step 4

Thank your parents first for taking the time to meet with you. Talk to your parents with respect to show maturity on your part. Your parents need to feel that you are mature enough to date and go to an event such as Homecoming. Discuss your plans and present to your parents the information you have gathered regarding money, transportation and Homecoming information and details.

  5. Step 5

Have the names of friends that are attending the event that your parents may know. Understand if your parents wish to think about the Homecoming event over night. Girls should be prepared that their parents will want to meet their Homecoming date prior to the event.

  6. Step 6

Make your parents a part of the plans for the Homecoming festivities. During your conversation to ask permission, tell your parents that on the way to the Homecoming Dance you would like to have your date and other couples meet at your home for photos and so that your parents can meet other couples going to the Homecoming Dance. This is usually a hit with parents and makes them feel like they are being included in your special night.

  7. Step 7

Handle whatever answer your parents give you with understanding. By being prepared and organized for your meeting to ask permission, your parents should allow you to go to Homecoming. If not, politely ask why and if there would be anything that you could do to change their decision. Suggest a group date or at least going with one other couple as parents feel there is safety in numbers. Work with your parents to come to an acceptable option for all of you.
