In today's world, communication is more technologically based. Rather than simply talking in person or on the telephone, more and more teenagers are spending their time at the computer and are chatting online with friends using instant message services. While this is in fact fun and easy, it may be hard to convince your parents to allow you to do use AIM because of pedophiles lurking behind the scenes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask your parents nicely if you can install AIM onto your computer. Research exactly what this would entail and explain that this service is free to your parents. Be sure to let your parents know that AIM cannot install unwanted viruses onto their computer.

  2. Step 2

Explain what AIM is and why you want to use this to communicate with your friends. Let your parents also know that using this kind of communication can help you with your keyboarding and spelling skills.

  3. Step 3

Allow your parents to supervise your usage of AIM. By allowing your parents to be in the same room with you and to check up on your messages periodically shows that you are responsible and that you are not using inappropriate language.

  4. Step 4

Promise to your parents that you will not give out your screen name to strangers or speak online to anyone that you do not know. You should also make this promise to yourself because there are many pedophiles lurking online just waiting to find out personal information from young adults. Read about online safety regarding chat rooms and instant message services.

  5. Step 5

Make a schedule and time limit with your parents so that they know when you are using AIM and for how long.
